A fantastic evening of learning and professional development at the University on Wednesday, with our latest CPD event focusing on Low Vision.
It was great to bring colleagues together to share knowledge, discuss the challenges faced by patients living with visual impairment, and explore how we can continue to improve the support and care we provide within our communities.
A big thank you to everyone involved in organising and delivering the evening, and to all our local optometrists and colleagues who attended and contributed to the discussions.
Events like these are an important part of what we aim to do as an LOC: bringing the profession together, supporting continued learning and ultimately helping us provide the best possible care for our patients.

The charity SeeAbility announced the launch of a new tool, the Bradford Visual Function Box. The tool is designed to help identify what a child or adult with a learning disability or special needs can see and how they use their vision, and to explain this to parents and support staff. At the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, we asked you all not to send any Routine Referrals. Thank you for your assistance with this, as this greatly helped our local eye department.
As of last week , GP’s are now able to send routine referrals to the Eye Department at the Bradford Royal Infirmary. So I would encourage you to now send any referrals that you had been holding onto over the last few months.
However there are still significant limitations to the services that can be offered by the Eye Department. In addition there is likely going to be a longer wait for the patient to be seen by the Eye Department. As such it would be most helpful if you could inform any patient that you are referring that there will likely be a longer wait to be seen. I’m hoping to get more information regarding this in due course.
Please note the above guidance relates to the Eye Department at the Bradford Royal Infirmary. A number of other ophthalmic providers in this area have also started accepting routine referrals. However I would advise you to check with the individual provider regarding their timescales and services offered.

Allowing us to treat and manage Red eye, Dry eye and many other non visual eye complaints.

A useful update for practices using EYEV.
The new interface is continuing to roll out, with improvements designed to make referral outcomes clearer and easier to track.

📢 Oculoplastics Referral Update
Optometrists can now refer suitable adult NHS oculoplastic patients directly to Newmedica Bradford and Huddersfield via EyeV.
The service is consultant led, with routine waiting times currently around 16 weeks. Newmedica will also manage IFR applications where required.
Please ensure referrals clearly document the patient’s symptoms, clinical findings and functional impact.
